Have you ever taken the opportunity to speak with your local missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints? Whether you are a member nor non-member, the missionaries have a lot to offer you — from service, to friendship, to sharing their knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Many members of our church may see missionaries as only those who are interested in teaching and baptizing new members of the church. While that is true, they are also there to assist members of the church in the areas they are called to serve in.
In my stake, we have four missionaries who serve in the area, a set of elders and a set of sisters. All of them are wonderful people, and I’ve taken great pleasure in getting to know them over the past few weeks. I’ve learned so much from them, and they’ve made me really excited about serving a mission of my own. As I have spent time with them, I’ve been able to learn from their example of service and I’ve noticed all the love they have for the people that they serve. This past week, I was able to attend their zone conference — a meeting where all the missionaries get together to receive counsel about how they can better their service. They are a great example to me as they continually devote themselves to their service and are constantly trying to improve themselves. It’s inspiring to see those who have taken 18-24 months out of their lives to lose themselves in serving others.
In the October 2012 General Conference, Elder Russell M. Nelson gave a talk titled, “Ask the missionaries! They can help you”. To quote him:
“Some of you may want to know how to conquer an addiction or live longer and enjoy better health. Ask the missionaries! They can help you!
Some of you may feel that life is busy and frenetic, yet down deep in your heart you feel a gnawing emptiness, without direction or purpose. Ask the missionaries! They can help you!
If you want to understand the Bible better, to understand the Book of Mormon better, ask the missionaries! They can help you!
And if you want to know more about life after death, about heaven, about God’s plan for you; if you want to know more about the Lord Jesus Christ, His Atonement, and the Restoration of His Church as it was originally established, ask the missionaries! They can help you!”
I know that missionaries are called of God. They are literal representatives of Jesus Christ here on the earth with us today. Their service is a great example of love for others. I can’t wait to become a missionary one day!
