Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. -Ephesians 6
In life we need protection. Life is a battle everyday. Our battles may not be the same as ancient ones, but the are just as bad. The Apostle Paul said, “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against… spiritual wickedness.” In this battle we are in, we need to decide now whose side we are on. Richard G. Scott said, “Stay on the Lord’s side and you will win every time.”
Satan is always trying to find ways to tear us down, trying to get us believe that we aren’t good enough. Our standards are constantly being attacked by the media, and staying on the Lord’s side is hard. In battle you need armor. In ancient battles they had armor like breastplates, helmets, shields, and swords. Thankfully God has given us 6 pieces of armor in the scriptures (Ephesians 6 and Doctrine & Covenants 27) to help us fight these spiritual battles.
1. THE GIRDLE OF TRUTH
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth” -Ephesians 6:14
Truth keeps us from giving into the world’s beliefs and Satan’s lies. Be virtuous. Be chaste. Be honest. Be true. I love how the first word is stand. We must stand firm. If we don’t stand for something, we will fall for anything. President Thomas S. Monsoon said, “Be the same person you are in the dark, that you are in the light.” We must know who we are, and what we stand for. You are a child of God, don’t forget it.
2. THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
“Having on the breastplate of righteousness”-Ephesians 6:14
What does the breastplate protect? Our heart. The most important thing in our body. The best way to spiritually protect our hearts is to fill them with the word of God. The word of God changes hearts. We see that so many times in the Book of Mormon. When King Benjamin taught the word of God to his people they said, “Yea, we believe all the words which you hast spoken unto us; and also, we know of their surety and truth, because the Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent, which has wrought a mighty change in us, or in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually.” (Mosiah 5:2) It is so much easier to be righteous when we lose the desire to do evil and break the commandments.
3. THE SHOES OF PEACE
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” -Ephesians 6:14
Author, Anthony Sweat said, “Feed Shod is a figure of speech that tells us that the best footwear for our mortal journey ahead of us is the gospel of Jesus Christ.” In this spiritual battle we are in, it is easy to get busy, overwhelmed, and hard to feel peace at times. Sometimes we need to step back and refocus. The gospel of Jesus Christ really is the source for true peace in this world. I feel peace the most when I pour out my heart to God, study the scriptures, and go to the temple. The world defines peace in things like: a massage, a walk on the beach, a quiet relaxing afternoon, etc. I’m not saying that these things are bad; I enjoy them all. But they are all temporary. The peace that comes from Christ is different than peace the world gives you. He said so Himself, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)
4. THE SHIELD OF FAITH
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” -Ephesians 6:16
The first principle of the Gospel is faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ. Faith leads to action. Faith is the principle of power. If you have faith you can do anything. As Kaity said in one of her previous blogposts, “To have faith in Christ means relying completely on him – trusting in His infinite power, intelligence, and love. It also means that you believe in His teachings. To have faith in Christ means believing that even though you do not understand all things, He does. He is always ready to help you as you remember His plea: “Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not”(D&C 6:36)” When we have faith in Jesus Christ, there is no reason to doubt or fear.
5. THE HELMET OF SALVATION
“And take the helmet of salvation” -Ephesians 6:17
The Helmet of Salvation protects our mind. President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “I marvel at the miracle of the human mind… No computer or other creation of science can equal the human brain. What a remarkable thing you are. You can think by day, and dream by night. You can speak and hear and smell. Look at your finger. The most skillful attempt to reproduce it mechanically has resulted in only a crude approximation. The next time you use your finger, watch it, look at it, and sense the wonder of it.” Our brains are amazing! It is our job to keep our minds clean and pure. Our minds are gifts from God; don’t pollute them. Stay away from drugs and alcohol, and other things that harm your mind. Don’t fill you mind with dirty things by watching, listening, saying, or doing things that you know you shouldn’t. Treasure you minds. Keep them clean so the God can speak to you.Fill them with knowledge and other wonderful things.
6. THE SWORD OF THE SPIRT
“and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” -Ephesians 6:17
The Holy Ghost is our secret weapon. When we are baptized we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. He becomes your constant guide and companion. He will testify of truth, and warn you of danger. The Holy Ghost will give you peace, strength, and knowledge. 2 Nephi 32:5 says, “The Holy Ghost will show you all things what ye should do.” If we have the Spirit with us always we will never be lost.
I invite you to put on the full Armor of God. We can and will win this battle, if we stay on the Lord’s side.
