The Dangerous Road of Pornography

We live in a day when most of us have a little computer in our very own pockets. It’s so easy to look up questions we have and in two seconds the answer is there. Media can be such a blessing and also a temptation. Whenever God inspires new things like technology, Satan tries to use it to destroy us.  With the internet we need to be extra cautious while on our computers, laptops, smartphones, iPads, etc. Satan knows the things that get our attention and what we are interested in, and then he carefully gets us to us to destroy us. We need to remember that Satan’s main desire is to destroy us, and Heavenly Father’s main desire is to love us and help us return to live with Him.

So many youth and adults are being carefully led into the trap of pornography.  If you find yourself interested in it, then STOP IT NOW. It will destroy your priceless future.  Get on your knees and talk with your loving Heavenly Father even if you feel too guilty. He knows your struggles and wants to help you. Please visit your Bishop for counsel.  He will give you the help you’ll need to fight this evil temptation.  Remember, Satan uses pornography to destroy you and those you love.  There are SO many resources on-line that can help you.  A great website created by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is Overcoming Pornography. This website doesn’t just help you, but it helps your family and friends know how to help you stop the addiction. If you have a friend or family member who is struggling with pornography please encourage them to go see their Bishop as soon as possible, and to go to this website.  Stopping the addiction has the power to save their future marriage and family, or save their current marriage and family.

It always starts with a little look and if we keep looking, it eventually destroys us. The addiction becomes stronger and our faith will die. Marriages and families are the heart of Heavenly Fathers plan, and pornography destroys marriages and families.  Linda S. Reeves, Second Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency, said: “Young people and adults, if you are caught in Satan’s trap of pornography, remember how merciful our beloved Savior is. Do you realize how deeply the Lord loves and cherishes you, even now? Our Savior has the power to cleanse and heal you. He can remove the pain and sorrow you feel and make you clean again through the power of His Atonement.”

My family decided a few years ago to have a family home evening about media in our home.  We decided to set a time limit of how long we are on the internet, we also have to be in an open room where the whole family hangs out in, we also dock our smartphones, iPads, etc. in my parents room so we are not tempted to use them in our bedrooms. I am so grateful for these family rules, because I feel it helps keeps our family away from the temptations like pornography on the internet.  It takes our whole family working together to keep the Lord’s Spirit in our home, and keep Satan’s influence out of our home.

I know if you do things to strengthen your faith you will desire the Spirit in your life, you will feel the Savior’s love for you. Inviting the Spirit will create a strong desire to stay away from destructive influences and you will gain a testimony of the Savior that will keep you on the path of  happiness.

Ambree, thank you for your willingness to tackle such a challenging topic. I’m grateful for youth like you who are doing their best to live standards that are different than the standards of the world. Thank you for the advice and encouragement you shared here.
