I am a speed skater. At the Olympic Oval, where I train, I have a locker to keep things safe that are valuable to me. The front desk lends us a lock and key we can use if we agree to pay for the key or lock if it is lost. I made sure to keep my key on a lanyard that I took with me every day to train. One day after practice I looked at my lanyard and saw that my key wasn’t there! I searched the halls thoroughly but had no success.
That night I told my parents what had happened, they laughed and said that I would have to pay it off by doing chores around the house. I dreaded the thought of doing all the chores. I prayed to my Heavenly Father that I could find it, and kept faith that He would be there for me. The next day I went to the Oval, with money borrowed from my parents in hand. I told them about the situation. I slowly started to hand the money over when one of them said, “It’s your lucky day, we have an extra.” I was thrilled! How could something so small make me so happy! After this happened, I took great care of that key, and even got a spare just in case.
This small and simple experience taught me a few lessons: our Heavenly Father cares about us, our trials require action, and faith is essential.
We all have our struggles in life. This experience taught me that Heavenly Father cares about all our trials whether they are big or small. Even though it was a small deal, I felt that my Heavenly Father helped me.
“But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” (James 2:20) I did everything in my ability to find that key. I retraced my steps, I asked my friends for help, and I took the time to look for it. I know if we make an honest effort, our Heavenly Father will then help us.
I had faith that if I prayed and I did everything to find the key, Heavenly Father was there to help me. I found the key in a way I would have never imagined. I realize that Heavenly Father always has a plan for me. It may not be what I have in mind, but it is always for the best. My faith that He knows what’s best for me has grown.
Whether small or big, in this case small, I had learned and became smarter. There are many situations that have much more impact on our lives, but He cares no matter what. He has a plan for us and we need to trust Him. Keeping faith in Him will help you find the “keys” in life.
