My friend’s dad has a rule for my friend and I when it comes to dating. He calls it the “2-for-1 Rule”. It is where you can take a girl on a date twice, but you cannot take her on date number three until after you have taken another lucky young lady on a date. This may seem like a silly rule, but I am glad that I have it to follow. This rule is important because, as it says in my faith’s guide for youth called For the Strength of Youth, it is important to try and avoid going on frequent dates with the same person.
There are other dating guidelines in the For the Strength of Youth that I follow, like not dating until I am 16, going on group dates vs. one-on-one dates, and only dating those who also have high moral standards.
Obviously now that I am sixteen, it isn’t too hard to follow the “don’t date until 16” rule, but for some I know this standard can be frustrating, especially when you are a fifteen-year-old who just wants to go to a school dance.
Group dating is not a hard rule for me to follow either, because why would I want to plan a date all by myself when I can make all my friends suffer with me?
The last rule, to date girls with high moral standards, can be hard because I don’t always know the person’s standards. I think this makes it all the more important to make sure that those around me know my standards and I try to make them very apparent. If someone knows my standards, I’ve found they will typically respect those standards and will help me to live them as well.
Now, I am not saying that if you go on a date before you are sixteen, or if you go on a one-on-one date then you won’t make it into heaven. But I do know these rules are here for a reason and are more like guidelines. They are not there to restrict, but to help. These guidelines are designed to keep youth like me safer and to help so I will not make a decision I will regret. Two important goals I have in dating are to keep myself far from temptation and to keep myself worthy to one day marry a nice young lady in a temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I know that following these rules will help me to achieve these goals.
