Everybody has that dream of living the rich life while rolling in the “dough” eating all the Hi Chews they want…
No? Well, that might not be yours but everyone dreams about money. Making money can be fun stuff, but what about when you are asked to pay tithing? Money can be very influential in our lives, it is the one thing that helps us live our lives the way we want to. People can sometimes crave money, and although it isn’t bad to work hard for something, we can’t let it control our lives. I believe that is one reason the Lord asks us to pay tithing.
What is tithing and why do we choose to give back? To tithe is to freely give one-tenth of one’s income annually to the Lord through His Church. These funds are used to build up the Church and further the work of the Lord throughout the world. Tithing funds are always used for the Lord’s purposes—to build and maintain temples and meetinghouses, to sustain missionary work, to educate Church members, and to carry on the work of the Lord throughout the world.
Tithing is a way to give back and show gratitude to our Heavenly Father. It is even a privilege. When I work for money I always think it’s mine and mine only, but that isn’t always true. We have to realize that everything we have comes from God, and we need to thank our Heavenly Father for supplying it to us. So paying him back the money that’s already his kind of makes sense. President Gordon B. Hinckley once said, “There is no compulsion to pay tithing other than the commandment of the Lord, and that of course becomes the best of all reasons.”

It is said that we are supposed to pay 10% of our income. This also helps the church grow. As a bonus, the breath taking temples that you see all over the world are only possible because of the tithing we pay. The church is able to grow and be shared everywhere.
I know when I pay tithing I have received blessings in many ways. I am so thankful for the opportunity to pay tithing. It should not be a burden, but a privilege, and this privilege is a double blessing. By paying tithing, I can show my gratitude to God for my blessings and my commitment to trust in the Lord rather than in material things. My donations also help further the work of the Lord in the earth, blessing others of God’s children with the opportunity to learn of Him and grow in the gospel.
I always set money aside when I am paid and remember it is for tithing only. If you do this and create a habit it will be much easier. Remember to not burden yourself when paying tithing, but feel uplifted when showing gratitude to our Heavenly Father.
