“He who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious.”(D&C 78:19)
I don’t know about you, but I love to receive blessings in my life. I pray to my Heavenly Father asking if He would be so kind and get me the things I want. I know that He loves us, and He wants to give us everything we ever want. That is why we must be thankful for all that we have, and show gratitude.
When I yearn for something that I want, which is often, I sometimes forget about the things I already have. In today’s world we are all about getting the things we want…. NOW. The old can be soon forgotten, and replaced with the new. When we have this mentality, we can soon forget our Heavenly Father. We tend to tell ourselves that we have worked hard and it’s our money. This is true, but without Him all would be lost.
There is usually a cycle that we go through that happens multiple times in the Book of Mormon (see Helaman 12:1-6): starting with blessings and prosperity, to pride and sin, then chastening, finally humility and repentance and over again. I think this is parallel to the teachings of showing gratitude. When we show our Heavenly Father that we are thankful, our lives our blessed. When our arrogance rises we fall to pride and sin and forget all that our Heavenly Father does for us. Chastening takes place as we learn of our wrong doing and we don’t receive our full amount of blessings. We soon want to improve and go through the process of repentance with humility. Hopefully, we learn from this process and go through it very little.
I am 16 and during my short life I have already noticed an extensive difference in my life when showing gratitude. I enjoy life thoroughly and thrive in my surroundings. Gratitude is not only about the material things in our life, but for spiritual and mental things as well. Equally important, gratitude can play a big role in the person we may turn out to be. We can also express gratitude in many different ways. Following commandments and serving others can show that you love Heavenly Father’s companionship. We must tell Him we are thankful for specific things. Be especially grateful for His Son, Jesus Christ, who He willingly sacrificed for us to return back to Him one day. I know that if we will fully turn our hearts to the Lord we can find great satisfaction in our lives. If you show Him gratitude in your everyday doings, he will show much appreciation with the overflow of blessings you will receive. I am not perfect and go through the pride cycle often, and you probably will too. Try and remember these things I promise that it will make a difference.
