The Word of Wisdom is a set of guidelines that tells us what to do with our bodies. It explains what we should put into our bodies and what we should not eat or drink. On February 27, 1833 Joseph Smith received revelation about the Word of Wisdom. The Lord revealed to the prophet which foods are good for us to eat and which substances are not good for the human body. He also promised health, protection, knowledge, and wisdom to those who obey the Word of Wisdom.
The revelation he received explained that you should not drink alcohol or hot drinks. It warns not to use tobacco, but it also speaks of what you should eat like meat, fruits, and veggies.
When the Word of Wisdom talks about alcohol it says that it is not for the belly, it’s for washing our bodies. It continues to warn that hot drinks (coffee and tea) are not for the belly. About tobacco, the Word of Wisdom says it is not for the body or belly, only for sick or bruised cattle. The Word of Wisdom says that the flesh of all beasts and fowls of the air are for the use of man. It says all herbs and fruits are for the use of man.
We should completely avoid the substances that the Lord prohibits in the Word of Wisdom. Those who have started addictive behaviors can stop and become free from addiction. Through personal effort, strength from the Lord, help from family members and friends, and guidance from Church leaders, anyone can overcome addiction.
God promises that if you follow his Word of Wisdom, then you can run and not be weary, and walk and not faint. He says that the destroying angel will pass over you as it did with the children of Israel. We need to remember that our bodies are a temple given to us by God. We need to respect his gift and his rules. So keep in shape, don’t do drugs, don’t drink, stay away from addictive things, and eat lots of good fruits and veggies.
