The Purpose of Missionary Work

by Lincoln

All of my life I’ve been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – more widely known as the Mormons. I’ve grown up within a family that goes to church every week, and friends who share the same beliefs I do. In our church, we follow our prophet, who speaks directly with God, and we follow his instructions. One of the Lord’s expectations revealed by the prophet is for all able and worthy young men to serve a mission, as well as any young women with the desire to serve God. We believe that missionaries are called of God all over the world to spread the message of His gospel for a period of two years.

A mission may sound like a difficult task. It sure doesn’t sound easy to leave your family and friends for 24 months to go to a place you may not know about, speak a language you’re unfamiliar with, and live with people in a culture you do not know. But for me, it is one of the things I look to forward to most. I know that somewhere in the world, the Lord has a place for me to go and teach his gospel. Waking up at 6:00 every morning, walking and riding a bike everywhere, and adapting to a new culture won’t be easy, but I know that the blessings and experiences that come from serving will be worth it.

I have a friend who also is planning to serve a mission. When I asked her why, she told me that missionaries had played a big part in her life, especially when she decided to get baptized. She remembered the guidance and knowledge the missionaries provided for her, and now she wants to go out and do the same. She also explained how she will not only help others grow closer to God, but through teaching others the gospel and learning more and strengthening her testimony, she will grow her relationship with Heavenly Father. I know all of that is true, and she will make a fantastic missionary.

My dad always talks about how his mission, the Hawaii Honolulu mission, was the greatest mission on earth. That may be true, but I have heard several other returned missionaries brag that their missions were the greatest missions on earth. I know that each of them is right because Heavenly Father specifically called them to a certain place to serve their missions. They were meant to go where they were called and have the experiences they had for a reason. I know that by serving a mission, Heavenly Father helps us grow closer to him. He blesses his missionaries with knowledge of the gospel and with guidance throughout their lives.

I can’t wait to be called as a missionary! I look forward to the day I will be able to serve the Lord by doing his work. I know that God wants me to begin preparing now to serve, and I know that by doing so, I will grow into the person he wants me to become.

Thanks for your comments, enthusiasm and excitement about serving a mission. Serving in Australia 48 years ago is one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope that you will have a character strengthening experience when the time comes that you are able to serve.
