What is Agency?

by Whitney

“It is our choices that show us who we are, far more than our abilities.”– Albus Dumbledore

All of us made the choice to be on God’s side, that is why we are here! God allows us to make our own decisions because He loves us! Agency is the gift given to everyone on earth from God; it is the ability to choose right from wrong and act for one’s self. We come to earth to be tested, and to see if we will use our agency to show our love for God by keeping the commandments. The devil seeks to destroy our agency with things like drugs and alcohol, which impair our choices/decisions. God will always have standards/guidelines, but he will never force us to do anything. Although you can choose the choices you make, you cannot choose the consequences that come from those choices. Bad choices lead to sorrow; righteous choices lead to happiness. We are responsible for how we react to every blessing.

“The world isn’t split into good people and bad people. We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are!” – Sirius Black

All of us are born with the light of Christ inside of us. We must choose if we will let it show or not. We can choose if we want to be happy, or if we want to hold a grudge. We must choose how we react to everything! Sometimes people do things that irritate or make us mad; we may want to choose to freak out and get mad at them. For example, my younger brothers love to come in my room and take my stuff. It drives me crazy! Sometimes I really want to go yell at them, and sometimes I do. But I always regret it. We must remember that how we react affects not just the person we are getting mad at, but also everyone around us, including ourselves. When I was little my mom would always ask me “ What would Jesus do?” That is a good reminder to us all now, because Christ went about all his life doing good. He was perfect! That should be our goal, to be perfect, even as Christ.
