We asked the youth at Small and Simple Truths what they like most about General Conference. Here are their responses. Feel free to “Click to Tweet” your favorite!
The typical primary kid answer to why I like General Conference would be because of the spirit I feel when I listen. The spirit that fills my whole home as the Prophets voice can be heard on a radio or TV in almost every room. But for me its not only the feeling I get or the things that I learn. Its the time I spend with my family. Conference weekend has created countless traditions in my house. Aunts, Uncles, and cousins come over from out of town, we cook cinnamon rolls and Zucchini cake during the second session on Sundays, and my little sister paints my toenails and brushes my hair while we watch. The front room is scattered with coloring books and crayons and puzzles. My mom has some type of sewing project on her lap and my dad has his scriptures and notebook open as he tries to mark and write down every precious word. It seems like so much is happening all at once but only a few whispered words are actually spoken. Everyone is listening. Its a peaceful kind of chaos and I honestly look forward to it every year. I encourage everyone to watch General Conference, even if you are listening alone. It brings the spirit in a way only hearing the Prophets voice could do. Every doubt in my mind gets erased and every question I had gets answered. The people that speak are prophets, seers, and revelators of God. And I know that to be true. So watch Conference! Its awesome!
I am always excited for conference mainly for family traditions and bonding time, usually involving Chinese food and ice cream. However, that is no longer the best part of it. When I started to take seminary and paying close attention to the messages given I learned that they are truly inspired messages. If I have questions or concerns I will pray about them and do some study myself and then all of conference I will listen for the answers to my questions and I know I will find them. I love conference because I am reminded that we are led by a true prophet who is called of God.
If someone asked you what your favorite time of the year was, most people would probably say something like, “Christmas time” or “Summer Time. But for me, it is “Conference Time”. Every six months we have the opportunity to watch, hear, read, or attend General Conference. General Conference is a series of meetings where we have the opportunity to hear the word of God through counsel from Prophets, Apostles, and other church leaders. I love everything about General Conference. The messages are always so inspired, and they always seem to be exactly what I need to hear. Before General Conference I always try to prepare myself by praying and going to the temple to get figure out what questions I have, or what I need to hear in my life. Preparing for Conference is important to me because it gets my spirit in-tune and ready to hear the counsel from the prophets. I challenge you to prepare yourself for General Conference and figure out what questions you have, then take the time to listen to the words of the Prophet and Apostles. I know that they truly are called of God, and that they love and care about each of us. I know that the words they speak come from God, so please listen. I know that if you apply the things that they say into your life, that your life can be changed.
What I love about general conference is that you can be inspired more than ever before. The speakers chosen are all amazing people, and I love hearing them speak. They all have phenomenal messages to share with us. Some people may be inspired differently than others, but that’s what I love about it. That is why I always look forward to General Conference.
Someone once told me that General Conference is more important than the scriptures. In a way I believe that is true, but in another sense I believe both are vital for our spiritual health. And the reason why is because you are getting direct council from God; but in General Conference it is right then and there that you find for yourself some of the most amazing spiritual revelations. If you pray and ask God to show you some kind of revelation—pertaining to anything—then I promise you, He will answer. That is why I love General Conference, because you receive revelation.
There has been so many times in my life where I go into the first week of April and October and I just have something on my mind that I am unsure about or I don’t understand. I have found that after watching General Conference I usually find the answer to that question through the prophets and apostles. I love watching General Conference because it’s the only time that I really get to listen to the prophet and apostles teach us. There is a primary song called “Follow the Prophet” and it talks about how the prophet knows the way and will help us get back to our Heavenly Father. General Conference is a time where our prophet can give us guidelines and ways to become closer to our Heavenly Father. I hope that all of you reading this blog has a chance to watch General Conference and really listen to what our prophets and apostles are teaching us. I know that if you do this you will find an answer to whatever questions that are in your mind, it’s happened to me and it can happen to you too.
As a small child, my parents would drag me to my church twice a year where General Conference was broadcasted. For four long hours on both days of the conference, I would sit and listen to a bunch of people speak. I did not look forward to General conference, and so I didn’t get very much out of it. All of that changed a couple of years ago. My 9th grade seminary teacher promised my class that if we listened and paid attention to the words being spoken by the General authorities of the church during conference, we would hear something that would be of help to us in our own lives. That first conference I attended after this promise was a new experience for me. I received an answer to a question I had concerning something going on in my life at the time. Ever since then, I have enjoyed conference. I know that it is a time for us to receive counsel from the Lord.
What I love about General Conference is that you can receive personal revelation. Before General Conference, I make a list of things that are important to me, my strengths, my weaknesses, and questions that I have. Writing down these things allows you to reflect on what you’re thankful for, how you can improve, and what specifically you want to know. I pray and ask my Heavenly Father to help me find my answers. This provides the Spirit to be present. Then throughout conference I write down quotes, thoughts, and impressions. I try to listen with an open and sincere heart. This is when I can truly find my answers. I feel as if the prophets, apostles, and other general authorities are speaking directly to me. They know what we are going through, and they can help us! I challenge you to write down, pray, ask, and listen. See the difference it will make in your life. If you do this, I can promise you that you will hear what God has to say to you. Most of His miracles are performed through others. Let God help, change, answer, and heal you through our latter day prophets.
What I love about General Conference is the family time. I love being able to take a weekend were I spend a lot of time with my family, and I don’t have to worry about the troubles of the world. We like to take a drive into the canyon to see the leaves while we listen to conference, and I have very fond memories of those trips. I encourage you to make General Conference a fun family bonding experience.
Why I look forward to General Conference is because it’s a time when prophets are speaking directly to us and are inspired on what to say! It’s like having brand new scripture every six months! And every time there is always something that seems to speak directly to me and I can’t wait to see what it is this time!
1) I get to be with my whole family, listening to the prophets and apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. 2) My family stocks up on treats. For example: Peanut M&M’s, Skittles, Smart food, Muddy Buddies, Pringles, etc. 3) We eat a big breakfast together with cinnamon rolls, fruit, and French toast. After breakfast we talk about what we want to get out of General Conference. 4) Making a family fort, before watching General Conference. 5) Taking notes, feeling the spirit, and receiving answers.
My favorite thing about General Conference is that you can get as much out of conference as you desire to, no matter who you are. Kids, adults, teens, anyone; conference is made for all of us to receive inspiration and learn from God through the spirit. I invite all, members and non members, to listen, watch, or attend General Conference. As you listen, keep in mind questions you may have in your life, and see what Heavenly Father and His apostles have to say to you.
The phrase “Listen to your elders” is often thrown around. Why? Because of the great knowledge they have gained through experiences in their lifetimes. Listening to the apostles is great, not only do they have great knowledge about life, but they have received inspiration from our Heavenly Father to guide us in these latter days. Listening to the apostles is like listening to the prophets from the scriptures. The stories and knowledge they have to offer is priceless! I love to hear ways on how I can improve my way of life.
What I like most about General Conference is getting to spend two entire days at home, with my family, while listening to the apostles and prophet speak as mouth pieces for Heavenly Father. My family is a pretty busy family. My father is always at a hospital or ER helping someone, my mother is busy with doing a very good job at keeping our whole household in order, and my sister and I are typical teenagers caught up in school, athletics, and our social life. General Conference provides us with two uninterrupted days, every six months, which remind us what this life truly is about. General Conference puts everything back into perspective and encourages me and my family to make goals to be better people, better friends, and better disciples of Christ. I love general conference and I know you will too if you listen this weekend to the wonderful messages that the prophet and the apostles have to share.
We invite you to join us in listening to General Conference! How can you watch or listen? We’re glad you asked!
