3 Ways to Draw Closer to Christ

By Whitney

Life is crazy–I’m sure any high school student would agree. There is school, homework, sports, work, family, church things, and the list just goes on. There is one lesson that I believe God has been trying to teach me for a long time, and I think I am finally starting to get it. That lesson is to put God first, and everything else will work out. In Philippians 4:13 it says “I can do all things through Christ, which strengthens me.” I know that with the help of our Savior we can do anything. When we are baptized we promise to always remember Jesus Christ. We cannot remember Christ if we do not know Him. I have come up with a list of three practices that help me draw closer to Christ and always remember Him.

1. Study the scriptures daily.

I love the scriptures. I can really tell a difference in my day when I read them or not. Why? Because there is power in the Book of Mormon. It is the keystone of the Latter-Day Saint religion. It is what holds it all together. The scriptures are a witness of Jesus Christ, they contain the fullness of the Gospel, and they are the foundation of testimony. “Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God. {Moroni 10:32}

The Book of Mormon should not only be the keystone of our religion; it should be the keystone of our lives. Joseph Smith said a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by an other book. I have come closer to Christ by studying the teachings of Christ in the scriptures. The Book of Mormon and the Bible both testify of Christ, but we also have the words of modern day prophets, which also testify of Christ. I have learned how God speaks to me by studying the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and General Conference talks.

2. Sincerely pray morning at night, and many times in between.

One of the best ways to get to know someone is to talk to them. It is the same with God. If we truly want to get to know Him, we must take time to talk to Him. We talk to God through prayer. We should pray sincerely, with real intent. In our prayers we should express gratitude and ask for guidance. I love to pray and pour out my heart to God, because I know the He is listening and that He cares. 40-60% of our prayers should be on our knees listening. I know that if we give God a chance, He will answer our prayers

3. Attend the temple regularly.

The temple is my favorite place to be. There is a peace there that cannot be felt anywhere else. If you ever need inspiration from God, the temple is the place to go. Why? Because it is His house. If you do not currently have a temple recommend, I highly encourage you to get one. My temple recommend is something I would not want to live without. Even if you cannot currently enter the temple, there is still peace that can be felt on the temple grounds. I love to take my scriptures and study them while sitting in front of the temple.

I know that as we all try to become a little better at these three things that we will draw closer to Christ. I have seen the results in my life and I am still constantly trying to get nearer to Christ.

    I agree that putting God first is important. Putting God first at such a young age is a very spiritually mature act. Thanks for your written thoughts.

    Thanks, Whit! Your blog is always right on. Life is hard and it is too hard when we don’t allow the Savior in. To have Him as a constant companion lightens our load and makes what seems unbearable, bearable. Unfortunately, it is easy to let everyday life get in the way. So, thank you for the wonderful reminder of needing to constantly seek Him.
